What is so good about the South side of Ware?
Written by Jonathan Hunt
This is a question often posed to me and can only be answered by taking time to look around this interesting part of town.
The first thing that strikes one is that most of the area is set up on a hill looking down on the town, almost as though it knows that in some way it is superior to the rest of Ware. As you climb one of the many residential roads the contrast with the town centre, just a few hundred yards away, couldn't be greater, a peacefulness about the place envelops you, there is no litter, virtually no crime and no parked cars blocking the road.
Because most of this area was developed between the 1920's – 1960's there is a general spacious feel between houses which is sadly lacking in most modern developments. Many of the gardens particularly in the Windmillfield/Hoe Lane area are in excess of 100ft, a rarity in the rest of town.
This part of Ware also boasts the majority of the finest houses in the town. With their large level plots and grand designs some of the properties in Hoe Lane are valued around the £1 million mark.
For the commuter, access to the A10 is quick and the station is just a short stroll for most residents.
For all this, the south side of Ware is famed for Scott’s Grotto, the largest in the country, the grotto is a cave system built in the 18th Century extending some 67ft into the chalk hillside. More information on this can be found at www.scotts-grotto.org . Other notable attractions include Presdales School, formed as Ware Grammar School for Girls in 1906 and described in 1996 by the chief inspector of schools as 'outstandingly successful'. For the golfer there is the Chadwell Springs 9 hole course set high on a plateau overlooking the Lea Valley and for the rambler or dog walker, the Post Wood Circular Walk (behind Postwood Road) comes highly recommended on related websites.
To conclude, it is difficult not to get excited selling properties here and if we appear to use terms as 'much favoured' or 'desirable' then this is through a genuine love of the area.
